The Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control is headed by a president and a vice-president.

The Office has six Directorates-General: Directorate-General 1 (Central Services) is in charge of internal administration. The Directorate-General 2 (Export – Procedures, Authorisations, International Regimes – Procedures, Outreach Projects) and 3 (Export – Technology, Technical Assessment, International Regimes – Technology) deal with export control. Directorate-General 4 is entrusted with the promotion of economic development and SMEs. Directorate-General 5 is committed to driving the transition to renewable energy and successfully implementing the Federal Government‘s climate protection targets. Directorate-General 6, the Auditor Oversight Body is responsible for the supervisory control of the Chamber of Public Accountants and ascertains mistakes of auditors and audit firms, which conduct audits for enterprises of public interest.

The Directorates-General in turn are subdivided into Directorates and Divisions.

The Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control presently has about 1,000 employees.
